Modeling of flow conditions at the Waldeck I pumped storage power plant

Research project of The Chair of Hydraulic Engineering

back to all research projects

Short description

The Waldeck I pumped storage power plant uses Lake Affoldern as its lower storage reservoir. For technical reasons, the outlet and extraction structure of the power plant can only be equipped with a coarse screen. To protect the fish, a fish scare system is to be installed at the outlet and extraction structure in the future. Three-dimensional numerical flow simulations were carried out for the positioning of this fish scare system. The flow simulations are based on high-resolution bottom soundings of the Eder River with a multibeam echo sounder in the vicinity of the structure, which were realized in January 2019. The bottom soundings were intersected with construction plans of the outlet structure in the near field of the structure.

Based on model calculations for a total of 12 operating cases, the main influencing parameters on the velocity distributions at the outlet and discharge structure were identified. Two variants were presented in more detail and graphically prepared for the positioning of the fish scare system.
