Prof. Lehmann as a guest on Planet Wissen: Hydropower – energy source without a future?
Hydropower is one of the renewable energy sources and is considered to be environmentally friendly and clean. However, the damming of water bodies, which their use usually requires, is accompanied by problems for the flowing water ecosystem. Loss of habitat for flora and fauna, siltation and deterioration of water quality are some of the consequences. This article discusses the need for near-natural water landscapes in terms of ecology and drought or flood hazards, and highlights the potential of hydropower for the energy transition.
