Potential Assessment for Hydrothermal Heat Supply of the Locations Waterworks Wehrda and Software Center

Research project of the Chair of Hydraulic Engineering

back to all research projects

Short description

The municipal utility of Marburg is interested in an increased use of renewable heat and would like to have the potential for hydrothermal heat supply assessed at two locations. For this purpose, the heat potential of the river Lahn in Marburg is first determined in general and then transferred to the two locations.

Wehrda Waterworks

In Wehrda, it is being investigated whether the new waterworks being built can be supplied with heat via hydrothermal utilization of the Lahn and the groundwater pumped by the waterworks. The New Waterworks Wehrda is to pump groundwater, which has temperatures between 10 and 15 °C. At the Old Waterworks, there is an existing hydropower plant with millrace. The described project area is shown in the following figure.

It is to be examined whether the room heating of the New Waterworks can be provided by a hydrothermal use of the Lahn and the groundwater pumped by the waterworks with heat. The recreation rooms and the chemical storage are to be heated. In the event of a surplus of heat on the river side, it is to be investigated whether this can be diverted to the Old Waterworks to heat the three rental apartments located there.

Software Center Heat Grid

The Software Center heat grid is currently supplied with heat from the main network of the Marburg municipal utility. However, the subnetwork is separated from the main network by a transfer station and can therefore also be operated separately. Both the Lohmühlgraben and the original bed of the Lahn below the Grüner Weir are to be investigated as heat extraction areas. Buildings in the vicinity of the river beds are to serve as connection points for the river heat into the heat network.

The potential of the Lahn to provide river water heat for feeding into the heat grid Software Center has to be examined. The heat consumption data of the heat network will also be used to determine the probable hydrothermal coverage.
