Short description

Physical model fo the culvert at the flood control reservoir
Physical model fo the culvert at the flood control reservoir

To improve flood protection on the Alb, the towns of Ettlingen and Karlsruhe decided to implement a flood control reservoir with a maximum reservoir capacity of 1.3 mil-lion m³. In the event of flooding, it is thus possible to store large quantities of water in a limited area and then discharge it in a controlled manner via a culvert at a later date.

The construction of the 1:25 scale model consisted of two phases. In the first step the terrain was modeled on a total area of over 100 m². This includes part of the reservoir with the planned dam as well as approx. 200 m of the course of the Alb river in the tailwater. The centerpiece of the model investigations, the culvert, was then embed-ded in the designated location in the dam.

The aim of the physical model tests on the model of the flood control reservoir is to investigate the hydraulics of the structure to ensure the functionality of the culvert. This includes in particular the development of a control concept for the adjustable sluice gates and switch guards to adjust the controlled discharge of the Alb in the tailwater. The culvert is sized for a design flow BHQ10000 = 201 m³/s, which corre-sponds to around four times the standard flow.
