The dimensioning and corresponding design of the spillway (weir, weir channel, spillway and stilling basin / “plunge pool”) must be confirmed or optimized by means of physical model tests. The model tests include the assessment of the upstream flow conditions to the weir spillway and the weir flume, the discharge capacity of the spillway, and the energy conversion in the downstream section of the watercourse for different operating scenarios of the movable closure devices:

  • A) spillway (weir/threshold, segmental gates, weir channel, and spillway); and
  • B) Energy Conversion Facility (“Plunge pool”/Basin with the scour and erosion in adjacent stream segments).
