Research project of The Chair of Hydraulic Engineering

Short description

As part of a research and development concept of the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) and the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG), a fish ladder is planned at the Wallstadt (Main) barrage site as one of several pilot facilities throughout Germany. The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (Wasserstraßen-Neubauamt Aschaffenburg) is acting as the developer and client. Here investigations are planned, which are to be assigned to the research area “detectability of fishways”. The focus is on the development and testing of fishway entrances (location and geometry) as well as questions concerning the amount of endowment water.

As part of the research and development concept, there are some specifications to consider when designing the fishway:

  • Entrance on the right bank, directly at the power plant, with bottom connection
  • Entrance on the right bank side, below the turbulence zone of the power plant, with bottom connection
  • Access on weir side left, directly at the power plant, with bottom connection
  • Entry to Collection Gallery (via turbine outlet)

In addition to the operating flow of the fishway, water is also added at the individual entrances. This is to improve the findability of the entrances for the fish.

The planning is carried out by a consortium consisting of FICHTNER and CDM Smith – the Chair of Hydraulic Engineering is involved in an advisory capacity. Current further information in German can be found here.
